Immediate Post-Surgery Care

Your well-being right after surgery is very important. For your safety, please make sure you have a responsible adult drive you home. We also recommend having someone stay with you for at least the first 24 hours.

Once you are home, the best thing you can do is rest for the remainder of the day. It is essential to avoid any strenuous activities for the period we discussed. Giving your body time to heal now will make a significant difference in your recovery.

Managing Pain

It is normal to experience some discomfort after your procedure. To help manage this, we will provide you with instructions for any prescription pain medication. You may also find relief with over-the-counter options like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, as directed.

To help reduce swelling, we recommend applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek near the surgical area. A good rhythm to follow for the first 24-48 hours is 20 minutes on, followed by 20 minutes off.

Oral Hygiene

Keeping your mouth clean is crucial for preventing infection. When you brush your teeth, do so very gently and be careful to avoid the surgical site.

We will provide you with a special mouth rinse or recommend a warm saltwater rinse to help keep the area clean. Please avoid using any commercial mouthwashes unless we have specifically instructed you to do so, as they can sometimes interfere with healing.

Activity Restrictions

Your body needs time to recover, so please avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for as long as we recommend. As you start to feel better, you can gradually return to your normal routine. Listening to your body is key—if something doesn’t feel right, it’s best to rest.

Follow-Up Care

We will let you know if a follow-up appointment is needed and help you schedule it. As you recover, please watch for any of the following symptoms:

  • Excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop
  • Severe pain that is not relieved by medication
  • Signs of infection, such as fever, increased swelling, or pus

Following these post-operative instructions is vital for your healing. Please remember that we are here to support you. If you have any questions or concerns at all, do not hesitate to contact us.
