Is It Too Late to Get Dental Implants? Usually Not — Here’s Why
Many patients wait years to address a failing smile, assuming there's not much left to work with. Instead, they typically discover that there's more opportunity...
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Dr. Kevin Yen is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Yen Oral Surgery in San Jose and Milpitas, California, trained through a dual DDS/MD program at USC and SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital Center in New York. Over more than 15 years in practice, he has focused on dental implants, full-arch restoration, bone grafting, and wisdom tooth removal.
Dr. Kevin Yen is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who has built his practice around dental implant surgery and full-arch reconstruction. He holds both a dental degree and a medical degree — the most extensive training pathway available in the specialty, and one that allows him to manage the surgical, medical, and anesthetic sides of a case himself rather than dividing them across providers.
Dr. Yen completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, then earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Southern California. He distinguished himself academically there, earning multiple scholarships and election to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society, which recognizes graduating students for scholarship and professional character.
He pursued his specialty training in New York, completing a dual-degree residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery through Kings County Hospital Center and SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. The program awarded him a Doctor of Medicine alongside his certification in oral and maxillofacial surgery — a six-year pathway that adds full medical school training and hospital-based surgical rotations to the standard oral surgery curriculum. Residents in this pathway train in a high-volume urban hospital setting, managing facial trauma, complex extractions, reconstructive procedures, and the medically compromised patients who present to a major public hospital.
Dr. Yen practiced in high-volume New York surgical settings before returning to California. Fifteen years and more than 25,000 procedures later, he brings a depth of case experience that is uncommon even within his specialty. He has placed over 7,500 dental implants and completed more than 100 fixed full-arch restorations — the treatment category that demands the most from an implant surgeon, requiring precise surgical planning, bone management, and coordination with the restorative team across a full jaw.
That volume matters most in the cases that do not go by the book: insufficient bone, failing dentition, previously failed implants, and medical histories that change how a case has to be sequenced. Judgment in those situations comes from having seen the variations, and repeatedly.
Dr. Yen holds dental licenses in California, New York, and Connecticut, and a medical license in California. He maintains hospital privileges at El Camino Hospital. His dual DDS and MD qualification, together with his anesthesia training, allows him to deliver IV sedation and general anesthesia in the office under his own credentials.
Born and raised in Los Gatos, Dr. Yen returned to the South Bay to practice in the community he grew up in. He sees patients at Yen Oral Surgery’s San Jose and Milpitas offices, a practice with roots in the area going back four decades.
